Martin Krestan

*sigh* I always dread writing these descriptions about myself, why you ask? Well it's quite simple, because I'm terrible at it. So lets just get straight to the point.

These thoughts, these random thoughts, are the last thoughts of a very very very very very slowly dying man...Oh and I'm also a Graphic Designer based in Brisbane...

  • The Bourbon Theory

I have a theory, bear with me here.  I call it the bourbon theory… Much like other theories, it is very scientific in nature.

For a while now I’ve been playing catch with work and everytime I get close to catching up I seem to get a flood of emails from clients which leaves me back at square one.

You might be thinking to yourself ‘But Martin, where does this mystical and magical bourbon drink come in?’ Well let me tell you, this theory is based on my apparent ability to work faster while drinking.

You see, every Friday afternoon at 4 in the office we all have a drink to unwind and while the majority of the office has a beer, I have bourbon (because I’m apparently a girl). It’s during this last hour of work that I seem (well in mind anyway) to work faster than normal.

So my theory is, if I can stay all bourboned, 9-5, Monday to Friday, I should be back on top of my work in no time and then some.

It was even mentioned to me that apparently some pro gamers have a drink while playing not to speed everything up but to slow themselves down / reduce the adrenaline in order to better control their button / key / thumbstick / what have you presses.

I believe that there are only about one or two real negatives to this theory, as small as they are and to be honest, not really worth mentioning but I will just for you, the first is the obvious loss of brain cells and the second is that in some circles, some very small strict circles, I could be seen as a massive alcoholic.

But I choose to not let these miniscule cons outweigh the more prominent pros.  Now, onto phase two.

I don’t know what phase two is but its time for it.

  • Always doing things the hard way..
And when I’m done, THEN I discover the easy way.  I know you’ve all been waiting for this, well, the 1 or 2 of you anyway. (Lets be honest, the zero of you.)  Anywho, turns out that this here image is a prime example of doing things the hard way.  The image is of a few initial (unfinished) logo concepts for a client of mine at work.  The idea behind it was that I wanted to create my own custom type for this particular logo, something that I’ve never really tried properly until now.
I took the time to sketch out a few round ideas and, after getting the help of 2 people, scanned it with the office printer/scanner goliath, used it as a guide for illustrator. (Yes, Technology rarely agrees with me) And so I proceeded to create and refine my ideas.  The first logo I wanted a more calligraphic look to it, I spent a good 30-45 minutes using Illustrator CS5’s neat little stoke width tool to make the lines thicker and thinner as if I were using a proper calligraphy pen (if my writing were legible to anyone other than myself that is).  I even used my hand to pretend to draw out the lines, curves etc. (Yes I may have looked like an idiot while doing it but it helped)  When I was happy with what I had done, ready to send it off to the client, (the finished concepts that is) it hit me, ‘Oh right, Illustrator has a calligraphy brush preset included with it’.  MOTHER FUCKER!
For something that took me a good 30+ minutes, Illustrator did it in two seconds, and made it look much better that what I did.  So what I’m trying to say is..
I hate you Illustrator, I know you’re laughing right now at me with the other computers at work.  You won’t be laughing for long when I ‘accidentally’ trip over you and some how boot you out a window into oncoming traffic.
Love Martin
You know I have a feeling that I was going to say something else but can’t remember what.  Actually on the topic of short-term memory, mine is terrible.  I’m surprised I can remember anyth…

I Love HRD Photography.  I think the best one of this lot is the green Ford Rally car, but there are some other really nice ones too.
